In todays world everyone is concerned about the environmental impact of products and packaging. Packaging is an integral part of the industrial and commercial supply chain protecting goods from damage and often prolonging shelf life. Suitable packaging protects goods from damage in transit thus reducing the overall waste level. We are all aware that insulating our homes can save money on our energy bills and as an insulating material polystyrene has a key role to play in the fight against global warming.
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is non-toxic, odourless and non-irritant. The EPS manufacturing process does not involve the use of ozone layer depleting CFCs and HCFCs, nor are there harmful materials present in the finished product.
Polystyrene is 100% recyclable with hundreds of tonnes being recycled every month in the UK. EPS is 98% air and its manufacture therefore makes it highly efficient use of natural resources.
At K B Packaging and Insulation we utilise any offcuts to create useful inexpensive packaging products - namely K B Packaging Cubes and K B Loosefill.
All of our products can be recycled and you can also return any surplus material that you may have for recycling. In this way we can work together to prevent unnecessary waste, disposal of which can be expensive and to combat global warming.
Expanded polystyrene has a Global Warming potential (GWP) of zero and an Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of zero. The British Research Establishment (BRE) awarded expanded polystyrene the highest possible rating of A+ in its Green Guide following extensive research into the properties of various insulation materials. Polystyrene is a sustainable product for use in the construction industry.
Extruded polystyrene also has an ODP of zero and a GWP of below 20. The GWP can be reduced to below 5 if carbon dioxide is used as blowing agent and some products of this type are currently available.
